Data privacy deals with the sensitive information of individuals and has become a major topic in modern society. keyhough the practicality of mobile apps has become an essential part of the routines of all most everyone. Consumers are increasingly concerned about their data privacy. Most of the time, these privacy policies that are used to collect and share data that are lengthy and complex to understand. Therefore, a common user finds it hard to understand before agreeing to the privacy policy terms. This project propose an approach to convey privacy policies in a way that a common user can comprehend.
First, we conducted a few interviews with industry professionals to gain a better understanding of the problem at hand and to generate suggestions for categorising privacy policies so that users may better comprehend them better. Then, using the information gathered from the interviews and research papers, we developed the ten categories. Following that, we created a chat bot mobile application so that consumers could communicate with the bot about their privacy concerns. For example, if a user wants to know a company's data reservation policy, they may easily communicate with that bot and obtain such information.
The main challenge we faced was holding the interview sessions because I was still in my third year of university at the time and the professionals who came to the interviews had vast knowledge and expertise in the industry. We overcame this obstacle by working together and correctly preparing the interview sessions. Personally this was a huge experience for me.
Based on this study, we were able to successfully submit a research paper titled ‘Automated Categorization of Privacy Policies Based on User Perspective’ to the IEEE ICIAfS 2021: Information and Automation for Sustainability 2021.
The presentation that follows goes into great detail regarding the project. For further information, you can refer to this presentation.
