My Role
UI/UX Designer
Organic Chemistry Conversions is a smartphone game designed to improve the organic chemistry skills of college students. This engaging game comprises 100 levels, each challenging the players to drag and drop the appropriate chemicals into corresponding slots. Successful combinations unlock the next level, allowing players to enjoy the game while improving their knowledge on organic chemistry.
In this project my role was focused on designing the game interfaces. First I created a paper wireframe, which I then translated into a digital prototype. The primary colour yellow was chosen because it symbolizes inventiveness, a key attribute required for students in solving organic chemistry problems.
Research
Before starting the project, I conducted research on the design of popular level-based games such as Angry Birds. This research helped me understand the design principles used in these games and user experience (UX) of these games, which I applied to the designing of Organic Chemistry Conversions.
Wireframing
I then created a paper wireframe as an initial conceptual representation of the game's interface. This wireframe was used to gather feedback from stakeholders and to refine the design. After that moved those into digital wireframes using Figma.
Prototyping
After gathering feedback and refining the design, I created a digital prototype of the game using Figma. This prototype was used to test the game's functionality and to gather feedback from users. Following stakeholder presentations, the prototype transitioned to the development phase.
The main challenge in designing the game's interface and user experience was that I had limited experience in this area. However, I was able to overcome these challenges by conducting research, gathering feedback, and refining the design by keeping the user's needs in mind and having an open line of communication with the stakeholders.
While certain constraints limited our application's launch exclusively to Android users, the outcome was better than expected. The application got exceptional reviews, achieving a rating of 4.6/5.0 with over 1,000 downloads in the Google Play store in a relatively brief span. These accomplishments were attained with minimal marketing efforts, emphasizing the application's appeal and impact.
